While they have many scenes and themes in common the book and movie diverge at points, particularly toward the end.

The hero returns to the “normal” world with a whole new outlook.

Karl surviving the previous encounter with McClane (while entertaining) was one of the less grounded concepts in the film. For the most part, the terrorists were effective because they were just ordinary guys with guns.

The movie went with a much happier ending than the book. Were potential sequels a factor in this decision?
