Editing Services

If you’re looking for a variety of edits to improve your work in progress, the Writing Lodge has you covered. Our staff thrives on working with authors at all different stages in the writing process by helping them create their strongest possible story. The road to each author’s personal masterpiece is often a long and winding one which we can help successfully navigate.

How We Edit

While there are two editors, our beliefs align in that we do not impose our personal styles or preferences. Instead, we coach, advise, and do all we can to polish every work in progress. We also feel it’s important to provide practical tools and strategies for the author to use in future endeavors. Our edits are in-depth, giving each of our clients a comprehensive list of suggestions and solutions to work with. Our goal is to help craft manuscripts into their ultimate forms.

What We Edit

We welcome all genres and age ranges. If you have a YA steampunk ghost story or an adult alien romance (and everything in between), we want to see them! We have no triggers and are not easily offended. We’re not fact-checkers for nonfiction and historical fiction; however, we invite both genres and are pleased to offer the same big picture edit.

Developmental/Substantive Editing

Gregory and Kimberly act as your personal manuscript doctors to find any and every instance that the text could be adjusted to make the overall story stronger. They’ll focus on clarity, dialogue, character arcs, and plot development using a number of proven templates, and consider often-overlooked aspects such as character speak, consistency, and pacing. In addition, they’ll look for any problems with paragraph, section, and chapter organization. This includes a 5-7 page critique/feedback report and a minimum 30-minute phone or chat consultation.

Rates: $0.014 per word.

Copy Editing

Want to get an extra layer of edits? Copy editing corrects errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, style, and usage. In addition, we’ll point out overly long sentences, and help eliminate unnecessary italics, bold print, capitalization, exclamation marks, and passive voice. (We strongly suggest that you have a developmental edit done first, even if it’s not with us.)

Rates: $0.012 per word.

The “Dip Your Toe In” Deal

Unsure if you want to commit to an entire manuscript? We offer a sample developmental edit of the first 10,000 words for $175.00. For copy editing, $150.00 will cover your first 10,000.

Full Packages

Purchase both types of editing together and save: get a developmental and copy edit for only $0.023 per word.

Not sure if you need both? If you opt for one type of editing and decide to add the second later, we’ll give you 60 days to make the change. Your total will revert to the package cost instead of the individual cost.

Booking

For editing services, we’ll go over your project and goals to make sure we’re a good fit. We’ll then write up an agreement and collect your deposit, which locks in rates (unless you opt for the package within 60 days). Turnaround time is generally within 2-4 weeks.

Payment

We require a non-refundable 50% deposit before we begin editing, and we’ll release the edits and critiques upon receipt of the balance. Contact us if you’re interested in working out a payment plan. The “Dip Your Toe In” option must be paid upfront. We accept payment via PayPal.

All rates are in U.S. dollars. Manuscript pages must be double-spaced, using 12-point Times New Roman or Courier font.
